Preloved Car Hire

What you need

A valid driving licence, proof of who you are and where you live, and a payment method in your own name. We check all three on every hire, every time, and we will tell you exactly what to have ready when we quote.

What to have ready

  • Your driving licence. The photocard, and we may ask you to generate a DVLA check code so we can see the endorsements on it. That is a normal part of hiring a car, not a sign of a problem.
  • Proof of identity and address. Usually a recent utility bill or bank statement alongside the licence. We will say what we can accept.
  • A payment method in your own name. The person hiring the car and the person paying for it need to be the same person.

About checks, plainly

We check your licence, your identity and your address before a car goes anywhere. That is not a hurdle we are apologising for — it is the reason the person who hired the car before you gave it back.

You will find car hire advertised elsewhere with the promise that nothing is checked at all. We would rather tell you what we check than compete on that, and if being checked is the problem then we are not the right company for you.

If your licence was not issued in the UK

This comes up a lot from people who have recently moved here, and it is a fair question to ask before you go to any trouble. A licence issued elsewhere is often perfectly usable, sometimes with something else alongside it, and sometimes for a limited period after you become resident.

Which licences we can take is set by our insurance rather than by us, so the honest answer is that we confirm it for your specific licence before you book. Tell us where it was issued and when you got it when you enquire, and we will come back with a straight yes or no.

Why this page does not list an age limit or a licence-held period. Those conditions are set by our motor insurance, and we would rather leave them off than publish a figure we then have to correct. Ask us when you enquire and you will get the real answer for your situation.

Common questions

Do you need a credit check to hire a car?
We run identity, licence and address checks on every hire, every time. Whether a credit reference check forms part of that depends on our insurance and payment terms, and we will tell you plainly which checks we run before you apply. Anywhere you see a car offered with no checks at all, ask what is being left out.
Can I hire a car with a foreign licence?
Often yes. Which licences we can accept, and whether anything else is needed alongside, is set by our insurance, so we confirm it before you book rather than guessing on a web page.
